Letters from General W.T. Sherman to Lt. Frances V. Greene. 1877-1888.

Several letters to Greene while he was with U.S. Engineers c/o U.S. Legation in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1877. In 1885, Greene was at West Point. Content of letters reflect Sherman's philosophy of war, general comments on fighting in several areas of the world at that time and Greene's books.

Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829. He left his widow, Mary Hoyt Sherman, with eleven children and no inheritance.
